Death Working Backwards!

I’ve been reading through Randy Alcorn’s book Heaven with a group of men and this week we came across a quote from C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series.

Though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know.  Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time.  But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned…she would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards.

I love the line, “Death itself would start working backwards.”  If you study the Bible long enough you will soon see the message of redemption running through every page.  I’m amazed at how the Word points us toward total redemption and a new creation.  We find the Garden of Eden in the first two chapters of the Bible where man could fellowship perfectly with our Creator and then we see that fellowship perfectly renewed in the last two chapters of the Bible.  That is not a coincidence…God is working toward perfect redemption.

When we share the Gospel we must consider the Fall of man, we must consider the Crucifixion of Christ, but we must also consider the ramifications of the Resurrection of Christ.  C.S. Lewis captures that for us when he speaks of death working backwards.  Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection won the victory, it paid the price, and brought salvation to all who would believe in Him.  The death, burial, and resurrection not only brings redemption to mankind…it brings redemption to the entire universe.

The moment we believe in Christ we are changed.  We become New Creations, but the total ramifications of that will not be seen until we are glorified.  The beauty of the work of Christ is that began the work of “undoing” the effects of the Fall.  Death came as the result of the Fall, but the death, burial, and resurrection was so miraculous that “Death itself would start working backwards.”  One day we will experience the fulfillment of that with a New Heaven and a New Earth and that is all due to what Jesus did on the Cross and the Resurrection that followed!
